This week we're taking time away from the FELA
and other railroad issues to reflect on celebrating the founding
of our country and another year of independence and to wish all of
you a wonderful 4th of July! |

As a young child the 4th of July was magical. Family,
friends and neighbors came to the house. We ran through the sprinkler,
devoured hotdogs off the grill and ate so much watermelon we thought we'd
burst. Best of all, there was no bed time we were able to stay up way
past dark! And oh, the sky, the sky lit up after dark. It was loud, it was
awesome, it was a child's dream!
Today Im nearing 40. I have my own daughter who talks excitedly about
all the things I loved as a child about the 4th of July family,
friends, food, fun and fireworks. In her eyes, the 4th is so much like it
was as child for me, but she sees something this holiday that I didn't see
as a child our United States' Flag is everywhere.
Our Flag has been around for hundreds of years. During that time its
gone through some changes as our country has gone through changes. But for
all that has changed, our Flag has always stood for Freedom.
Unfortunately, for many years, the only place you would see our Flag was
at a baseball game or the local court house. And on the 4th of July, only
a few people brought out our Flag - most just celebrated the holiday
without it.
That's why this 4th of July is so different than any I've ever known. My
daughter, our children will know a 4th of July like one not seen in too
many years. Since that very tragic day, September 11th, our Flag has been
flying proudly, everywhere, all the time. I know some criticize that not
everyone is flying our Flag correctly, according to proper protocol
but its being flown. Maybe in time we'll all learn again the proper way
to fly our Flag. But for now, isn't it enough, isn't it great that our
Flag is flying!
Since September 11th, we've all slowed down a little to take another look
at our lives. We hold everything a little more dear our family, our
friends, our jobs our Freedom. Our Flag represents all those things.
Our Flag stands for all the men, women and children who over the years and
who still today, sacrifice to protect those very things. This 4th of July
is different! I hope everyone who celebrates this 4th of July, sees all
the colors in the sky, but mostly the Red, White and Blue.
