The U.S. Senate is currently deliberating on a bill that will take away railroad workers' rights to sue employers for asbestos related injuries.
The AFL-CIO's Transportation Trades Department (TTD) reported this week
that the railroad corporations, which are already exempt from the big punitive damage awards
that other corporations must pay for asbestos, are lobbying to further
restrict compensation benefits for railroaders exposed to asbestos.
Because of the general concern about asbestos exposure among railroaders,
we wanted to share the TTD's notice with our Straight Track
subscribers.

As if big corporations don't get enough breaks in this country, now the railroads want the U.S. Senate to take away injury compensation benefits from workers exposed to asbestos.
Under a federal law, the Federal Employers' Liability Act (FELA), injured rail workers are compensated for work-related injuries and illnesses. These workers are not covered by state workmen's comp systems. Seeing other big corporations lobbying for an anti-worker asbestos bill in Congress, the giant railroad companies are using this as a chance to deny their workers FELA protections when they get sick from asbestos.
The railroads are already exempt from the big punitive damage awards other corporations must pay for asbestos, so they certainly don't need another special break at the expense of their workers. It is time to say enough is enough.
