If your family members would like to attend the
seminar on Saturday, February 17th, beginning at 12:30 p.m.,
please contact Melissa of our office at (888) 425-1212 to confirm their
attendance.
The purpose of the Family Member Seminars is to help
your loved ones understand what must be done if you have been seriously
injured or killed while at work for the railroad.
We often discuss this topic at union meetings and at seminars we
specifically sponsor for railroad workers.
However, we believe that it is equally important that your family
members know what rights they have, what benefits they are entitled to,
and what steps must be immediately taken to protect the injured
railroader’s interests.
Over the years, our staff members have worked very
hard with union members and their families to put together the Family
Members Seminars so they truly offer something relative and valuable to
everyone who attends.
At this particular Family Members Seminar, Mrs.
Jennifer Ward, a spouse of an injured railroader, an individual who was
required to make several important decisions during a very traumatic
period, will join us in our discussion with family members.
Working behind the scenes, literally, will be Albert
"Chef" Bertoloni. Al will be preparing his award winning
"Italian Sausage and Potato Casserole" that will be served at
the seminar. As well as being a member and officer of the American Legion
Post No. 187 since 1984, Al is a dedicated railroader and has served as a
union officer for 25 years and as the Local Chairman of UTU Local 577 for
the past 20 years.

Al is a lifelong Chicago area resident, whose
grandfather worked for the Great Western Railroad as a fireman. Al began his railroad career during the summers of 1963 and
1964, when he worked for the former Milwaukee Road as a freight clerk.
During his college years he entered train service with the former
Chicago and North Western Transportation Co. as a yard brakeman.
In 1970, Al was drafted in the U.S. Army and
stationed at Ft. Eustis, Virginia. He
was then assigned to a railroad battalion and ordered to report to
Germany in 1971. In 1971 and
1972, Al was a conductor on a duty train transporting equipment and
supplies from Frankfurt through occupied East Germany to Berlin.
In late 1972, he received his discharge from the U.S. Army and
returned to Chicago and the railroad.
Who sparked Al’s involvement in American Legion
Post No. 187? His charming
“bride” of 30 years, Pam. In
August, 1993, Pam was elected President of the post’s Ladies’
Auxiliary. During her term,
she “persuaded” Al to join her and increase his participation in the
post’s activities. Since
1993, he has been an officer, trustee and/or executive board member of
the post. He currently
serves as the post’s corporation president and 1st Junior
Vice Commander. And, if you love a great fish fry, you'll be interested
to know that Al's in the kitchen every 2nd and 4th
Friday of the month for his post’s weekly Friday Night Fish Fry,
cooking catfish and “all you can eat” perch.
Al is one of those interesting and dedicated
individuals we have met along the way.
