New
One of A Kind personalized health management program from the American
Heart Association
The American Heart Association has developed a Web-based
heart attach and stroke prevention program that uses individually tailored
messages to help users change behaviors that put them at risk.
Free unlimited access to the new One of a Kind program
is available through a confidential, secure Web site and four simple
steps:
1.
Log on to www.onelife.americanheart.org.
2.
Register as a user and fill out a confidential heath/behavior
assessment.
3.
Learn what puts you at risk and get support to make changes to
reduce your risk.
4.
Interact with the program as often as you like.
The program focuses on risk factors and behaviors people
can change, treat or modify - like controlling high blood pressure,
diabetes and high cholesterol, quitting smoking, losing weight, increasing
physical activity and taking medication properly.
It analyzes users' readiness to make lifestyle changes
and identifies motivations and barriers to making them. Program information is instantly tailored to each participant
based on his/her lifestyle, personal preferences and risk factors.
Users receive motivational e-mails and unlimited access to their
own personalized Web site with customized online monthly newsletters,
low-fat recipes and the latest medical developments related to heart
disease and stroke. The
individually tailored messages support users through every step of
changing their habits and lowering their risk.
One Of A Kind is appropriate for all adults:
those at low risk for heart attack and stroke, those "at
risk," and those who have previously had a heart attack, stroke or
other cardiovascular-related event.
People who do not have Internet access at home may want
to try their public library. Free,
private e-mail (needed for the program) is available at a variety of sites
including www.altavista.com and www.hotmail.com.
The program is supported in part by CareThere, which
helps family caregivers fulfill their responsibilities while enhancing and
improving their own lives. Its
Web site (www.CareThere.com) helps
empower caregivers by providing easy access to locally delivered
healthcare products and services.
