Straight Track #84

Big-Holing Straight Track

We decided "big-holing" Straight Track this week was important. Like so many Americans, we are searching for a way to respond to the events of September 11 and its aftermath.

As part of this search, we decided to ask our readers for their input. There are so many ways to respond, and we also know there are a lot of sound ideas out there. This email is a call for our readers to offer their ideas and suggestions.

Choosing A Charity

One suggestion is to donate the funds that normally are dedicated to our gifts of Christmas fruit baskets to the charitable efforts. Typically, as part of the holiday season, we send these gifts to our friends and clients in recognition of the help and service they provide us throughout the year. The thought this year was to donate our fruit basket fund to one of the charities established to help the survivors of the attacks and their families. On top of helping the charities, and noting the heightened awareness over the anthrax threats, this year sending fruit in the mail does not appear particularly appropriate.

However, knowing that the outpouring of private charity since September 11 has been unprecedented with estimates of $1.2 billion already raised, we want your ideas and help in identifying where and to whom the money raised through our efforts ought to be directed. Some have suggested that many worthy charities unrelated to September 11 events are in fact struggling because of the unparalleled giving to September 11-related charities. Should we focus on these groups? Which groups are most in need?

Matching Funds Program

Another idea that has been suggested is to establish a matching funds program to benefit the families of the policemen, firemen and postal workers who were killed or affected by the September 11 events and its aftermath. We thought to establish an account, and match any contributions made by our friends, clients, and anyone else who would like to help -- with the goal to raise $50,000. This effort would have no administrative or fundraising costs – 100% of any money donated will go to the families.

Despite the fact that so many locals, lodges and divisions have already stepped up to the plate with generous donations of their own, if you would still be interesting having your local, division or lodge participate – either through common funds or individually – please let us know. Any money raised would be matched dollar for dollar by our firm.

These ideas stem from the calls for national sacrifice as we find ourselves in the changed reality that we all share today. Like all Americans, we mourn the dead from the September 11 tragedies, and honor those whose lives have been directly affected by the events.

To submit any suggestions or any responses, please drop us an email at info@felahfd.com, or give me a call at 1-888-425-1212 or in Chicago at 312-939-1212.

My deep gratitude to all for reaching out and helping to discover the best way to help.
